There are many different card spreads out there for reading tarot cards. To read the cards effectively, it's helpful to be familiar with their meanings and how you relate to them when they are in a spread. A three card spread is a great way to learn how to read cards for beginners.
Even before you start to use a three card spread, you can do a simple exercise daily. Its purpose is to familiarize yourself with the cards and the idea of reading them. It's easy to do and will strengthen your abilities when it comes to reading cards in general.
Shuffle your cards and pull one a day to see what your day will be like. Based on the card you pull, you can give yourself a reading with that card. Analyze what that card could mean to you in the day ahead. This is an excellent way to get familiar with the cards and their meanings. It also helps you develop your sense of intuition, which can also be very important for reading tarot.
The Three-Card Spread
To conduct a three card reading:
- Focus on your question.
- Shuffle your cards.
- Pull one of the cards and put it in the center of the reading area. This card represents the “present situation” in relation to the question you asked.
- Pick another card and lay it to the left of the first card. This is the past in relation to the question you asked. Keep in mind the past could be days before, weeks before, or even just the night before! This card connects you to the present situation or middle card.
- Next, pick your third card and lay it to the right of the middle card. This is the future or outcome position to the question. Keep in mind that this could be any time in the future.
Consider the meanings of each card, and examine the symbolism of the imagery from your deck. The symbolism of each deck is a little different, so use your intuition to apply the meanings to your life. We're using the Luna Sol Tarot, which is available in our shop.
Don't forget to consider the way the cards relate to one another, as well as their individual meanings.
And there you have it! You just did a tarot reading. When you're comfortable with a small spread like this, you can move on to more complex spreads.
