Traditionally, witches and neo-pagans tend to consider either Samhain or Yule to mark the new year. The turning of the calendar page isn’t significant to the turning of the Wheel, because there isn’t any astrological significance to the timing. However, none of that means that it isn’t a great time to set some goals and imbue them with some magickal intent!
You can cast this spell on New Year’s Eve, or even when you wake up on New Year’s Day. Choose the timing that works best for you. Moving into 2019, the moon is waning (and there will be a partial solar eclipse when the moon is dark!) and Mars moves from Pisces to Aries on New Year’s Eve. This is a great time to release the past to make room for what you’re going to work on in the future.
You will need:
- Pen and two pieces of paper
- Incense or smoke bundle. You could also use cannabis infused with your intent
- A candle (red or black)
- Clear quartz or other crystal. Black Tourmaline is a great crystal for New Year’s as it is a bodyguard stone that eliminates negative energy.
- A cup or chalice of water
Create sacred space, whether by casting a circle or simply grounding and centering.
Call upon each of the elements and directions. Light the incense, smoke bundle, or cannabis, and say:
Spirits of the east, of blowing air,
I ask you to cleanse away my past
And prepare me for the future
Place the smoking material somewhere safely. Pick up the crystal and say:
Spirits of the north, of standing earth,
I ask you to cleanse away my past
And prepare me for the future
Place the crystal on the altar. Lift the cup or chalice and say:
Spirits of the west, of rushing water,
I ask you to cleanse away my past
And prepare me for the future
Drink some of the water and feel it flow into you. Place it on the altar and light the candle. Say:
Spirits of the south, of raging fire,
I ask you to cleanse away my past
And prepare me for the future
Take your pen and paper, and write down what you want to release from the past. You can use the format, “I, (your name), release the following:” Or, write whatever moves you. Pour the things that no longer serve you into the paper.
When you are done, fold the paper up. If you have a heat-proof container, you can burn the sheet. If not, you can rip it up, flush it down the toilet, or do anything that dramatically demonstrates the fact that you are removing it from your life.
Next, take the second sheet of paper and write down what you want to attract in the future. Again, you can write something like, “I, (your name), invite the following:” Or, write whatever feels right.
Meditate on your invitation as the candle burns. When you are finished, blow out the candle and release your circle or end the spell. After a few days, leave your invitation and a small offering out in nature. You can bury these items, or throw them into running water if possible, to keep your spell secret.
